Which Golf Accessories Will I Want?

Ready to go play some golf? You have purchased suitable women's golf clubs, but did you considered the other equipment, the accessories? Well, here are a few suggestions before you begin your round.

Of course you already have golf balls, right?

Decide if you are walking your round of golf or riding in a golf cart? This decision will determine the type of golf bag you purchase. If you are a walker, are you going to carry your clubs or will you be investing in a push cart? If you carry your clubs you will need to purchase a golf bag that is light and has retracting legs so that when you walk away from your bag it stands on its own. I suggest that you get one that is very comfortable and is carried on your shoulders like a backpack. You can buy an inexpensive carry bag but remember, you get what you pay for. Some of the least expensive golf bags (around $50) are very uncomfortable to carry. Remember you will be carrying this bag around for about 4 hours if you play 18 holes and about 4 miles. You can see the importance of a good, comfortable bag. If you are riding a cart or using a push cart, the comfort of the bag is unimportant. Choose a cart bag with options you prefer. Go for what you like.

Next, you will need to make sure that you have a good golf glove. A golf glove will protect your hands from developing blisters while providing the surest grip on your clubs. There are many types and styles of gloves to choose from. One type of glove is made from leather. The softest leather is Cabretta leather and is the most widely used material for golf gloves. Because they are very soft they do not last as long because the thin leather wears quickly. Additionally, they are not waterproof. After Cabretta leather dries it shrinks and become very stiff, almost brittle. Many gloves such as the Precept golf glove are made of synthetic leather, which is not as soft to the touch but last much longer and perform better through the wet-dry cycle. When you try on a golf glove it should fit snuggly across the palm of your hand, without extra length at the finger tips. Be sure the glove does not extend too far up the wrist or in opposition, exposes the hand. The glove should fit to the top of your hand, and when secured with Velcro form a nice tight fit. If the Velcro extends past its mating surface you may need a smaller size. Before you buy any glove be sure and try it on to be sure of proper fit. Every manufacturer’s gloves fit differently. Also be sure and keep the plastic envelope that the glove came in so that after each round you can lay the glove back out properly. This additional care will promote a longer life for your glove by keeping it flat and dry.

Do you have a towel that can hang from your golf bag? Purchase at minimum one extra towel so you will always have one available. A golf towel is an important accessory that helps keep your equipment clean during the round. In between holes and on the putting green use your towel too wipe the golf ball clean of mud and grass. Use your towel on the putting green to dust away sand and leaves. You will also use it to keep your clubs clean. For this you might need more than a towel you may need a club brush that can get dirt out of the grooves of the club. If your clubs have dirt in the grooves the grooves are not able to do what they are there to do, promote spin on the golf ball. Also, use that towel to wipe down the grips of your clubs between rounds. This will help the grips last longer. While you are cleaning your grips take notice if they need replacing. The best glove will not work with a smooth , worn out club grip.

A good pair of golf shoes is like any pair of shoes. If you value your feet and are walking the course be sure to spend the extra investment for good quality golf shoes. Nothing is worse than getting out to the course with a new pair of golf shoes that are stiff and uncomfortable. Poor quality shoes will quickly leave you with sore heels and huge blisters. A good suggestion is walk around your home in the shoes before you try them out at the course. Some golf shoes are so comfortable they can feel like slippers on your feet the first time you put them on. Others are very stiff and require breaking in. You may need to spend a little more to get really good shoes but it will be well worth it. Keeping your golf shoes clean on top and bottom will help them last longer. You may have to change the spikes from time to time but the overall shoe will last longer if cared for. After each round use the golf shoe cleaning bristles provided at the course to clear the bottoms of mud and grass. Then use your towel to wipe down the tops. This will help keep them clean and shiny.

Another item you need (don't worry this is the least expensive of any golf accessory) are tees. Tees come in many different sizes. Short tees to very tall they all have a purpose. The shorter tees are used for the par 3's. Here you tee the ball closer to the ground just above the grass blades. For the driver you will want a taller tee. How tall is according to your preference. If you like to tee the ball way up you may want to purchase a 4" tee. You can buy a whole bag of a thousand tees or you can purchase just a small bag of around 20 tees. This will run you anywhere from $.50 for a bag of 20 to around $10 for a bag of 1,000.

Now that you are well equipped go out there and have some fun.
